When is verbal irony useful? Is it ever harmful?

In my personal opinion verbal irony is used only when you want to express something in an indirect way. I think it would be a good practice to try to say what you really mean in a respectful way.

Since it is sarcasm, some people could take your words in a bad way and their feelings may be hurt. Some people even use it with the objective of hurting other people which is really wrong.

When is verbal irony useful? Is it ever harmful?
I think that is useful when you try to communicate you are not agree with something or someone or whatever, so that helps to generate more conversation and maybe find some points where you and other people could be agree. It is harmful when you put the sarcastic tone in it, because ou want to make a critic (negative) that harm the people or the institution you talked about; somethimes can be fine (my point of view) if it is about demand something that is yours by nature, like a right or our life quality; but when you want to make a joke of someone only because the person is not as you want, it's better to avoid/skip the commentary. In a world of wrong sarcasm we can't even get a real conversation, so there's no point to discuss.

When is verbal irony useful? Is it ever harmful?

I think that verbal irony is very useful when we are in a talk with friends or with really closed people, because can be used to express something that really don't like us but in a lighter way. For a lot of comedians the use of verbal irony and sarcasm is the principal tool of their work, for example this is really common in stand up comedy. So the society use the verbal irony to express dislike but without being necessarily serious and in bad mood.
I think that maybe if someone in the conversation is not used to the verbal irony and sarcasm could feel harm by the use of it in some cases. Also if the conversation requires to be serious and someone says a verbal irony or sarcasm phrase, the others that are involved in the conversation could feel harm because they think that is necessary to be serious in those kind of conversations.
